FAQ
Why do faculty at UArts want a union and a strong union contract?
UArts faculty want a voice with the administration, and a seat at the table to win lasting improvements on issues including health & safety, job security, equitable pay, access to health insurance & other benefits, among other concerns. The majority of faculty at UArts are part-time, hired one semester at a time, with no job security or benefits. Full-time faculty are struggling with ever-increasing workloads and low pay. We want to be able to provide the best education we can for our students, and we need our teaching to be fully supported by the University in order to do so.
What’s the status of the UArts faculty union?
We ratified our first contract! On November 24th, 2020, UArts’ part-time and full-time faculty voted to unionize with an overwhelming 99% majority voting YES! And on February 14, 2024 union members voted with another 99% YES vote to ratify our first contract.
How can I join the UArts Union? How much are dues?
If you are currently teaching, or have taught at UArts in the last calendar year, you can click here to join the UArts union! Dues are 1.75% of your UArts paycheck, and will go into effect in Fall 2024. We only pay union dues when we are receiving a paycheck from UArts. Our dues help us build a strong union, and also support the organizing efforts of other Philly-area Higher Ed faculty and staff. If you are faculty or staff at another Philly Higher Ed institution, you can help build union power by joining our city-wide local UAP here.
